Drachten (a sad tale) /
april 2008

Story

This short music film is the ultimate product of the 'Drachten sessions'. Drachten is the city where de Vries was born and raised. The movie tries to give an impression of the Drachten atmosphere.

As some may know the duo Sterkenburg / de Vries have this strong preference for sad places and lost glory. In their perception, the city of Drachten is the summit of this. The many grey and cheerless flats and the abandoned industrial areas reminiscent of the old days when the city in the making still had plenty of opportunities to prosper.

That flourish came in the sixties with the advent of Philips and it seemed the fate of Drachten was sealed. More industry followed and many new neighbourhoods for the labourers were build. Nowadays, however, the detoriation and the loss of identity is clearly visible. These things come together in the cold and chilly look of this movie, what is intended as a metaphor for the aloof and desolate atmospheres of the old industrial city.
